Gameplay
Call of Duty: Blackness Ops differs from near previous installments, which would involve a usual three-country entrada while Call of Duty: Black Ops features 2 playable countries (Russia and the U.s.), but only has an American campaign. Players play from the perspective of Captain Alex Mason of the MACV-SOG, Jason Hudson of the CIA, and Russian-born soldier Viktor Reznov of the Ruddy Regular army. The game besides introduced several new features, such as dive-to-prone and the available use of a flashlight on certain weapons. Furthermore, the campaign's playable characters at present speak while being controlled by the player, a kickoff for the entire Call of Duty series equally a whole.
Campaign
Plot
The game is ready in the Cold War era. Much of the Call of Duty: Black Ops campaign is told through the eyes of SOG and CIA operative Alex Mason, primarily through flashbacks. Stonemason awakens strapped to a chair in a room filled with monitors, bombarded with questions past 2 unknown interrogators virtually a numbers broadcast. Mason then recalls several events from the by in an attempt to answer their questions, setting upwardly the missions of the game.
The first mission is a flashback to April 17, 1961. Mason and his comrades, Frank Forest and Joseph Bowman, accept part in the Bay of Pigs invasion to electrocute Fidel Castro and aid CIA sponsored Cuban exiles in overthrowing Castro'due south communist regime. Bricklayer apparently succeeds earlier realizing that the CIA's Cuban rebels are losing confronting Castro'due south armed forces. Therefore, he decides to stay behind to protect the extraction aeroplane with Woods and Bowman aboard from an oncoming blockade. Mason is then captured by the real Castro, who reveals that Mason had assassinated a decoy and hands him over to Major General Nikita Dragovich as a 'gift.' He is held captive at the Vorkuta Gulag, a Russian labor camp, for two years.
After further interrogation, Mason recounts how, during his imprisonment at Vorkuta, he befriended Viktor Reznov, a old Ruddy Regular army soldier and a returning graphic symbol from Call of Duty: World at War. Reznov assists Mason in sparking a prisoner insurgence at Vorkuta, which facilitates Mason's escape from the prison.
One month later on his escape, Mason is escorted to the Pentagon with his handler, Jason Hudson, where he receives authority from President John F. Kennedy to assassinate Dragovich; Mason briefly envisions pointing a gun at Kennedy. He is then dispatched with Woods and Bowman to Baikonur Cosmodrome in the Kazakh SSR to sabotage the Soviet infinite program. The squad saves a captured operative and destroy the Soyuz 2 rocket every bit it is launched. Dragovich, who is present at the launch, escapes alive, forcing Mason to spend the next v years searching for him.
By 1968, the SOG, including Mason, is deployed in Vietnam to investigate the Soviet presence. Later on Mason helps defend the military military camp at Khe Sanh, he is deployed to Huế during the Tet Offensive to recover a dossier with information on Dragovich from an unnamed defector. The team recovers the dossier, and Mason discovers that Reznov is the defector.
After Mason escapes Huế City, the campaign shifts to a mission in Kowloon, Hong Kong, where Hudson and Weaver are sent to find and interrogate Dr. Clarke, a scientist working nether Dragovich. Clarke reveals the location of a subconscious facility in the Ural Mountains before the trio are ambushed by Dragovich's men. Hudson and Weaver escape, only Clarke is killed before he can explain the numbers broadcast.
And then, later further interrogation, Mason reveals the story, as told to him by Reznov, of the history behind Dragovich, his right-hand man, Lev Kravchenko, and German ally, Dr. Friedrich Steiner. These events take place shortly later on Globe War 2. They particular Dragovich's discovery of the German biochemical weapon, Nova vi, and illustrates his ruthlessness as he murders his own soldiers to witness the effects of the weapon, including Reznov's close friend, Dimitri Petrenko. This mission ends with Reznov request Mason to hope him that Petrenko's death will exist avenged, and Dragovich, along with his allies, Kravchenko and Steiner, will exist killed.
The interrogation moves back to 1968, and Bricklayer describes how he and the remainder of his squad from the SOG fight their fashion through Viet Cong-controlled territory in an ultimately futile attempt to chase an elusive Kravchenko, and are after sent to locate and investigate a downed Soviet plane containing Nova half-dozen. During this investigation, Mason, Forest, and Bowman are captured by the Viet Cong.
Again, the perspective switches to Amanuensis Hudson, who is sent on a mission to infiltrate the base Clarke mentioned in the Ural Mountains, a suspected development center of Nova vi. The control room the facility is rigged with explosives in a trap set past Dragovich, simply Hudson's team is contacted remotely by Dr. Steiner, who gives his location and promises, in exchange for safety from Dragovich's systematic elimination of "loose ends," information on peachy the numbers broadcast.
Afterward this mission is completed, Mason describes to his interrogator how Bowman was killed while imprisoned, and how he and Woods escape from their Viet Cong captors. Stonemason and Forest fight across a vast swath of Vietnamese land in a stolen Mi-24 Hind to reach Kravchenko's base. At this base, Stonemason again meets Reznov, who leads him through the base towards Kravchenko. They confront Kravchenko and Woods stabs him, merely Kravchenko pulls the pins off of four grenades strapped to his chest, forcing Woods to cede himself by tackling Kravchenko out a window. In a huge explosion, Stonemason presumes the ii expressionless. Mason and Reznov then recover documents that lead them to Rebirth Island, the location of Dr. Steiner.
Mason's story converges with Hudson'south at Rebirth Island, every bit both fight their fashion through a Soviet Nova 6 research and production facility to reach Dr. Steiner. Hudson engages in an all-out assault on the facility with lite armor and a squad of CIA operatives, while Stonemason sneaks into the facility with Reznov. Bricklayer and Reznov reach Steiner only presently before Hudson and Weaver, and Mason watches equally Reznov murders Steiner.
However, when the same story is retold through Hudson's eyes, it is revealed that information technology was, in fact, Bricklayer solitary who shot Steiner, while exclaiming that he was Reznov and would have revenge. The flashbacks end and the interrogation continues. Hudson reveals himself and Weaver to be the interrogators and confronts Mason contiguous. In this mission, Hudson reveals that, while at Vorkuta, Bricklayer was subjected to severe mental reconditioning in order to turn him into a sleeper amanuensis who would perform Soviet missions in America, including assassinating President Kennedy. However, Reznov 'hijacked' his programming and used information technology to instill in Mason an absolute devotion to consummate Reznov's vow for revenge: to kill Dragovich, Kravchenko and Steiner. Reznov never escaped Vorkuta, but died during the breakout attempt, and the Soviet defector in Huế actually died before Bricklayer reached him. Mason'south visions of Reznov are a outcome of a dissociative disorder acquired by the traumatic brainwashing program.
Hudson reveals that Dragovich has sleeper cells placed all over the United States, which, when ordered by the numbers broadcast, will unleash Nova half dozen in every state capital letter in the country. Equally a result, the United States is now at DEFCON ii and preparing a pre-emptive nuclear strike on the Soviet Marriage. Hudson farther explains that the CIA needed Steiner alive to decipher the numbers broadcasts for them and so they could abort the Nova half-dozen release, but with his expiry, Stonemason in the only person left who has whatsoever knowledge regarding the numbers station and its location. As the reprogramming of Mason's brain is finally broken, Bricklayer recalls the origin of the numbers broadcast, a transport off the shore of Republic of cuba called the Rusalka. A CIA raid on Rusalka begins, with Bricklayer and Hudson infiltrating the underwater base protecting the ship, and Hudson calling the United States Navy to destroy the Rusalka. In the lower levels of the facility, Hudson and Mason face up Dragovich, and Mason strangles and drowns him to death before escaping with Hudson. He then regroups with Weaver, who declares victory.
Annal footage of President Kennedy prior to his assassination on November 22, 1963 is shown, revealing Mason was amongst onlookers who watched Kennedy disembark from Air Strength One at Love Field. His presence, and Dragovich'south taunt before his death, suggest that Mason may have carried out his initial programming. A hidden message that can be accessed in the game's main menu reveals that that Woods survived the confrontation with Kravchenko and is now incarcerated at the Hanoi Hilton.
